Essential free windows 8.1 downloads (my version) 😁

December 10, 2014 Leave a comment

As you all know I’ve moved back to windows mainly for the garmin virb overlay software for cycling and what’s been nice is to see my garmin 500 communicate with my laptop again with garmin express  👍

My tip things go wrong especially in this day and age plenty of viruses and mallware to catch you out so keep it minimal !!!!  Back up on a separate HDD every day but don’t leave it connected 💻

So I’m doing free only 👌

1) Garmin virb edit – ideal free software for you cycling videos
Get your power, speed cadence etc on screen to show your followers

2) Libre office – forget paying for ms office in 2014 no need

3) Popcorn time – A bit like Netflix but free 🐒 top work

4) Kodi (Xbmc) – free live sport / TV / films just the job

5) Windows movie maker – ideal for converting your movies for yOuTube upload
Virb edit uses iPhone mp4 converting files .mov no good 👎

6) Google chrome – never use internet explorer ever !!!

That’s all I need these days the Asus runs fast with no issues, 8.1 has been a present step forward as I’ve always hated the platform.

What next 78 days evaluation left then we move to windows 10 💻

Back to Lubuntu but this time Lubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)

Ups and downs I tried AntiX (Debian 7.5) for a few days it works but its not for me, very basic and very minimal but fast

The only reason I swopped from Lubuntu was due to the upgrade which I tried from TERMINAL never again I’ll go back to the UNetbootin option, download latest ISO use UNetbootin and chuck it onto a USB stick. boot up (press ESC on my ASUS S300 and run from USB EASY)

So its installed and NO BLACK SCREEN ISSUE WE HAD WITH UPGRADE VIA TERMINAL, installs fine except its using a US keyboard layout even tho I selected UK I’ve seen the issue prior to installing (in the release notes UK boards have issues)

Fix issue’s LIST

So first fix is UK keyboard (menu – pref – Keyboard input – input method – select + add – close – reboot UK is working FINE)

Brightness control – its there HA – FUNCTION KEY so FN F5-F6 (f5 down F6 up) life is good

USENEXT –  download via there site and install via package manager (nice and simple)

Browser – Official Google Chrome for me – direct download from HERE

Monitor – not ideal on HDMI but if you move your cursor deep into the bottom left the menu is found (it works)

Garmin Connect – files required for usb to from Garmin 500 device (gps tracking for cycling) HERE

HDMI SOUND – no sound from tv when plugged in Use TERMINAL

FIRST: sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer gstreamer0.10-alsa
THEN : xfce4-mixer

or find it in sound / video - select controls IEC958 TICK HDMI fully working :-)

Wow I kinda like the retro look and speed is pretty awesome ok my netbook is fairly new but still impressive, you try the demo option via USB

2 things worth noting – connecting to wireless and root password is user: ROOT & Pass: ROOT on the demo

I’ve highlighted this post from anther site for help with WIFI setup HERE

It doesn’t scan unless you add the wlan0 as stated in the instructions, oh and another thing right click on the wifi OFF to ON (easily missed)

there ya go another OS to tinker with next is WILL THE GARMIN 500 CONNECT TO AntiX 🙂

Debian AntiX is different to ubuntu as you don’t install via TERMINAL best get a guide up asap

plenty of surfing tonight and head scratching lol well a night pissing about scanning how the new system works INTERESTING !!!

START MENU  (antiX logo – applications – system tools – metapackage installer and select options / program to install (garmin seems to like opera on linux or midori but not chromium)

**** instructions for debian garmin install go HERE   *****

*** a good write up on AntiX luddite HERE ****
