Lubuntu wifi scanning & connecting

June 29, 2014 Leave a comment

Lubuntu isn’t the easiest to connect to wifi

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

then goto pref: net connections – add and select wifi add the routers ID – SSID eg BThomehub (ID) and in the general tab add the password under WPA for instance then save and close

go back to terminal LX in my case sudo dhclient and then fire up your browser and bingo you should be cooking with gas or even have the internet

Power meter software – Golden Cheetah for Lubuntu / Linux

Golden Cheetah
Cycling Performance Software for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows

My new power2max power meter comes with no software so after my FTP test over 26 minutes to get an idea on heart rate / power and cadence you need the cheetah software to see how you perform in certain area’s

you can find the GC software @ the software centre in the lubuntu menu but then after it installs you need to plug your Garmin in and run TERMINAL type GoldenCheetah and up it pops (with linux / lubuntu you might get this error Sqlite, so you need to install this  – libqt4-sql-sqlite – synaptic package manger has this file mark it and install shut terminal down and restart fully loads the info from your garmin JOB DONE

great free software you can find it HERE

Back to Lubuntu but this time Lubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)

Ups and downs I tried AntiX (Debian 7.5) for a few days it works but its not for me, very basic and very minimal but fast

The only reason I swopped from Lubuntu was due to the upgrade which I tried from TERMINAL never again I’ll go back to the UNetbootin option, download latest ISO use UNetbootin and chuck it onto a USB stick. boot up (press ESC on my ASUS S300 and run from USB EASY)

So its installed and NO BLACK SCREEN ISSUE WE HAD WITH UPGRADE VIA TERMINAL, installs fine except its using a US keyboard layout even tho I selected UK I’ve seen the issue prior to installing (in the release notes UK boards have issues)

Fix issue’s LIST

So first fix is UK keyboard (menu – pref – Keyboard input – input method – select + add – close – reboot UK is working FINE)

Brightness control – its there HA – FUNCTION KEY so FN F5-F6 (f5 down F6 up) life is good

USENEXT –  download via there site and install via package manager (nice and simple)

Browser – Official Google Chrome for me – direct download from HERE

Monitor – not ideal on HDMI but if you move your cursor deep into the bottom left the menu is found (it works)

Garmin Connect – files required for usb to from Garmin 500 device (gps tracking for cycling) HERE

HDMI SOUND – no sound from tv when plugged in Use TERMINAL

FIRST: sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer gstreamer0.10-alsa
THEN : xfce4-mixer

or find it in sound / video - select controls IEC958 TICK HDMI fully working :-)

Lubuntu black screen issue on 13.10 after upgrade

May 1, 2014 Leave a comment

Hi all upgraded from the original 12.?? version to 13.04 and last night had a little tinker and did the upgrade via terminal (1st time I’ve upgraded that way, previous was through the software center) all went well and installed after a while downloading.

Only issue is you can’t really see the timescale the install is going to take via terminal where you can on SC, so fired it up and BOOM issue no screen infact just a black screen. at 10.30pm its not the best time to get an upgrade issue (sleepless nights hey)

So at 5 o’clock I dug my trusty Lubuntu 12 out and reinstalled it all over again (FIXED)

So I started looking at what’s next to try, a quick google and I found this write up HERE with links to the best 6 for 2014

going really retro and installing AntiX 13.2 x 64 bit

Only writing this as opera is a pain in the arse and you get the AMD64 error when installing direct from opera’s website, so had a scan about and the fix is up and nice and easy via TERMINAL

you can find the full write up HERE always good to share 🙂

Copy and paste and enjoy

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb stable non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list'
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install opera

gotta love linux, it kinda makes you work but not really hard. Or is it think about things ?
