Funny things happen I was thinking to myself maybe I was harsh wiping windows 8 OEM off my new Asus S300 after a few weeks. 💻
And after months using various Linux distro’s I popped back and installed 8.1 all was going well TILL last nights shutdown update (cheers ms)
So the boot loop FIX !!! get into recovery etc
Hold shift and power up you get options to work with !!!!
I use safe mode with networking and then head straight for the control panel on start up
As always this is where windows let’s itself down big time, I use the restore point from yesterday “remember all that’s happened is a windows update I’ve installed nothing”
I’m sitting here going through multiple reboots 4 in total I wouldn’t mind but I’ve got a BIOS passkey to input every time so need to watch it lol
Repo for windows 8.01 here

using UBUNTU – NEED A USB PEN (I have no drive on the asus) here WinUsb (didn’t work)
update: use UNetbootin it works fine, I needed to disable the ubuntu hdd drive in bios for the pen to load. it all went well after deleting my hdd so windows would install.
I cheated a little and went for the enterprise evalution software 90 day trial !!!! its free and works and I’ll source OEM software to use with my original win 8 key asap
MS have made it so hard I paid for the OEM version windows 8 on my new ASUS vivobook Its slow so wiped it, but I have an old zotac mini that is running WIN 7 I’d like to upgrade but it won’t happen.
Could this be the cure HERE worth a try 🙂
I bought a legit copy of the new windows 8 on my asus S300c laptop but after about a month I binned it for lubuntu (LINUX) my old motac mini is running a copy of win 7 (Not legit but I’d like to become legit) but microsoft don’t make it easy do they. why can’t we just install a download copy from MS and install over the win 7 enter the key and bingo everyone is paying for what they using !!!!
NO its not that simple is it – somebody said use these keys HERE but that gives the error not for retail copy ! my key doesn’t work (even tho its paid for)
Why do we need to result in using hacks and stuff for stuff I own you ASK ? MS are sh1ts – GHACKS HERE
still no real fix April 2014
Issue installing my backup over windows 7 should not be a problem I bought the windows 8 copy with my new laptop so I can d what I want but as usual MICROSOFT have a different attitude and make it hard
tech post HERE
To setup your Zotac to boot from the USB drive or card:
- Insert the USB flash drive or card.
- Power up the Zotac and immediately press the Del key on your keyboard for BIOS options !!!!
- At the BIOS Setup Utility menu, use the right arrow key to go to Boot
- Use the down arrow key to go to Hard Disk Drives (I know. You may not have a hard drive, but go there.)
- Press Enter. Use the down arrow to select your USB drive or card.
- Press Shift +- to move it to the top of the list.
- Press F10 to Save and Exit.
Sept 2014 – No option to boot from USB – I needed to disable hard drive in BIOS to get it to use the lexar USB stick no idea why on this occasion !!!!!!!! 👌 🔌 🔫 Ubuntu 14.04 installed on zotac (no windows on any gadget from today)
You have the option built inside the USB files to install with WUBI (click for options)
next up install windows 8 over windows 7, its not as easy as before.
July 2014 – downloaded a copy of the latest 8.1 for install but the media driver error showed up (remember this is a pain as I’ve paid for windows 8 on my ASUS already but wiped it (files backup but still errors) microsoft really don’t do themselves any favours with the general public
Media driver error when installing – maybe try this from a fellow blogger HERE (Didn’t work for me)
No a fan of downloading things like this but if it works all good – speedy pc – HERE (July 2014)
One downside I’ve found is the windows key is missing I can’t find it anywhere and with windows 8.1 update available or even a reinstall you need it so a quick google search, this guys has the answer HERE
I used magical jelly bean keyfinder – downloaded HERE open it and finds the key nothing else to do easy life.
print screen on the asus s300 you need to hit the button and then enter paint and cntl + v to paste the image (key pic saved and ready to go)
